Carl Mariz earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri in 1957 and spent the next 45 years working in that field for Phillips Petroleum, Shell Chemical, and the Fluor Corporation. Living for eight years in locations as diverse as Japan, Abu Dhabi, Canada, South Africa, and the Netherlands has broadened Carl’s horizons and inspired his participation in the local chapter of the United Nations Association an organization in which his wife currently serves as president.

The son of immigrants, Carl proudly served as a member of the United States Army Reserves from 1958 to 1969, earning the rank of captain.

His interest in history and politics lead to his lifelong involvement in the Democratic Party. In addition to his active role in the local Democratic Club, Carl is also a member of the Orange County Democratic Central Committee, and a delegate to the California State Central Committee.

Carl, a past president and longtime member of the Jaycees (now the Junior Chamber of Commerce), believes it is important to contribute to the advancement of your community. In every place he’s lived, he has given a great deal of his time to support civic activities.

He and his wife Lavon have lived in Irvine for 24 years. They have three grown children and two grandchildren. Their son John is presently a US State Department Consular Officer on the Island of Malta, their daughter Lorraine operates a coffee stop in Ojai California and their youngest son Darrell is a lawyer presently working in the insurance industry.
